Syracuse University Libraries is providing an opportunity for students to decrease their library fines while contributing to a charitable cause. The initiative, titled "Food for Fines," will take place from December 6 through December 17. During this period, library patrons with overdue circulation fines can reduce their fines by donating healthy, nonperishable food and hygiene items. Donations will be accepted at the circulation desks of Bird, Carnegie, Law, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, and King + King Architecture Libraries. All donated food items will go to the Hendricks Chapel Food Pantry. It should be noted that fine reductions do not apply to interlibrary loan or lost book fees.

The program also welcomes contributions from individuals without current fines. The reduction rates are as follows: $1 per item for toilet paper, lip balm, rice, pasta, canned vegetables/fruits/beans, and pasta sauce; $2 per item for liquid soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, cereal, and canned meats/fish; $3 per item for lotion, oatmeal, canned soup/baked beans, peanut butter/jelly, tea, hot chocolate, ramen noodles and granola; and $4 per item for shampoo/conditioner, deodorant and coffee. Donated items should not be open or expired and single-use items are preferred.

For further details about "Food for Fines," interested parties can contact Nick Olivieri at naolivie@syr.edu.
