Ray Toenniessen, a U.S. Army veteran and Deputy Executive Director of the D’Aniello Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF), has been named as one of 57 scholars in the Presidential Leadership Scholars' (PLS) 10th annual class. The PLS program, over the past decade, has united more than 500 leaders to collaborate and learn about leadership through the experiences of Presidents George W. Bush, William J. Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and Lyndon B. Johnson.

The selection process for this year's class was rigorous, with scholars chosen based on their potential for leadership growth and personal projects addressing critical challenges in communities or organizations.

"I am honored to be selected as a Presidential Leadership Scholar," Toenniessen stated. "This is a tremendous opportunity to learn from outstanding leaders across different sectors, exchange fresh ideas and collaborate on solutions to some of our country’s most pressing challenges. I’m eager to bring the knowledge and network gained through this program back to our work here at the D’Aniello IVMF, where we can continue driving meaningful impact for our nation’s service members, veterans and their families."

Toenniessen's career includes four years as a commissioned officer in the Army. At IVMF, he leads over 100 employees nationwide, advancing national training programs and community services aimed at supporting veterans and military families.

His association with IVMF began in 2010 after leaving military service when he became the first national program manager of the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans. Since then, he has played a crucial role in developing programs that have reached over 230,000 service members, veterans, and military family members.

"Syracuse University and the D’Aniello IVMF are proud of Ray Toenniessen’s selection as a 2025 Presidential Leadership Scholar," said J. Michael Haynie, vice chancellor for strategic initiatives and innovation at Syracuse University. "Throughout his career, Ray has consistently advanced the interests of veterans and military families."

During the program, Toenniessen will travel with other scholars to various presidential centers to learn from former presidents and key officials about leadership approaches.

Since its inception in 2015, PLS participants have reported significant growth in skills with 96% indicating improved confidence in leading social change.

The 2025 Presidential Leadership Scholars program is set to begin on January 29.
