Syracuse University is set to relaunch its Orange Mentor Connect program in collaboration with Mentor Collective, an online mentoring platform. The initiative aims to bolster student success by pairing first-year and transfer students with seasoned sophomore and junior mentors who are familiar with the challenges of college life.

Research underscores the significance of mentorship in enhancing student outcomes. According to a Gallup-Purdue study, graduates with mentors are twice as likely to be engaged in their careers and report improved well-being. Additionally, the National Mentoring Partnership highlights that mentored students are 55% more likely to enroll in college and 130% more likely to assume leadership roles.

“Students tell us time and again that having a peer mentor—someone who has been in their shoes, faced similar challenges and successfully navigated them—makes all the difference in their transition to college,” stated Kal Srinivas, director of retention and student success. “Mentorship isn’t just about advice—it’s about having a trusted guide who helps new students build confidence, access resources and feel at home in the Syracuse community.”

Orange Mentor Connect offers more than just connections; it provides transformative experiences. Julie Hasenwinkel, associate provost for academic programs, remarked, “Mentorship strengthens students’ sense of belonging, expands their networks and builds essential skills for success. This program is not just about helping new students—it’s also an incredible leadership opportunity for mentors, who gain valuable experience in coaching, communication and problem-solving.”

The Office of Retention and Student Success administers the program using Mentor Collective's smart-matching technology. This system pairs students based on shared goals, interests, and experiences. Mentors and mentees can interact through various means such as text messages, video calls or face-to-face meetings.
