Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh has issued a snow safety alert starting Thursday evening as the city braces for significant snowfall and high winds. A Lake Effect Snowstorm Warning is in place until Sunday afternoon, January 5, 2025.
"Syracuse is well-acquainted with winter's challenges and, as the forecast predicts substantial snowfall and high winds, we encourage residents to exercise caution. We urge everyone to adhere to parking regulations to assist our plows in efficiently clearing city roads, especially with the heavy snowfall expected to begin Friday evening," said Mayor Walsh.
The alert emphasizes safe travel practices, adherence to parking rules, and the importance of clearing sidewalks and fire hydrants. Information on snow safety can be found at syr.gov/winter. Residents are encouraged to use the City's live Snow Plow Map and follow @SYRCityline on social media for real-time updates.
Plows will focus first on primary roads to ensure emergency access before moving to neighborhood streets once major routes are clear. Property owners are reminded of their responsibility to clear sidewalks and areas around fire hydrants. The Syracuse Fire Department requests a three-foot clearance around hydrants.
Residents should observe alternate side parking rules and park off-street when possible. The Syracuse Police will enforce these rules by ticketing and towing vehicles that obstruct plowing efforts.
Certain downtown blocks will have enforced seasonal odd-even parking restrictions, marked by posted signage. Violators risk ticketing and towing. More information on downtown parking options is available through the Downtown Committee or its brochure.
