Peter Koveos, a professor of finance and the Kiebach Chair in International Business at Syracuse University's Whitman School of Management, passed away on December 20, 2024, at the age of 78. Born in Athens, Greece, Koveos moved to the United States at 17 to attend American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts. It was there that he met his wife, Jean. While still in college, he was drafted into the U.S. Army.
Koveos furthered his education at Pennsylvania State University where he earned both a master's degree and Ph.D. He taught at Penn State and the University of Rhode Island before joining Syracuse University in 1982. Over his 42-year tenure at the Whitman School, Koveos served multiple roles including professor of finance and chair of the finance department.
He played a significant role in internationalizing Whitman's programs, particularly with initiatives in Russia and China during the 1990s. Among his accolades was the White Yulan Prize from Shanghai and an honorary doctorate from American International College.
Koveos' research focused on international financial markets with an emphasis on Asia, particularly China. His work has been published in numerous academic journals including the Journal of Monetary Economics and Journal of International Business Studies.
Beyond academia, Koveos co-founded ExportNY and served as its executive director since 1998. This program helped over 100 Central New York businesses develop international business plans.
The Koveos family described him as "a humble man" full of kindness who shared love and knowledge generously. They find solace knowing his legacy endures through those he mentored.
Michel Benaroch remarked on Koveos' dedication: “Peter was in the office a week ago finishing his school duties." David Weinbaum recalled Koveos' unwavering commitment despite health struggles: “Such was his dedication to Whitman.” Interim Dean Alex McKelvie highlighted his positive influence: “Simply, he was one of the good ones who truly cared.”
Professor Peter Koveos is survived by his wife Jean; daughter Kristina Jordan; sons Eugene and Alexander; grandsons Nicholas “Cole” and Christian Jordan; along with extended family members.
Syracuse University's Whitman School plans to honor Professor Koveos' legacy soon.
