The Tyler Center for Global Studies has provided a $20,000 grant to Syracuse Abroad and the Syracuse Office for Undergraduate Research and Creative Engagement (SOURCE). The grant aims to support international travel for undergraduate research and creative projects through Tyler Center Fellowships.
Students can become Tyler Fellows via two pathways. Summer Tyler Fellows will create independent projects guided by faculty and may conduct research in locations outside the United States. Fall Tyler Fellows will participate in Syracuse Abroad programs in Santiago, Strasbourg, or Central Europe, designing projects related to these locations with guidance from Syracuse Abroad and SOURCE staff. Applications for these programs are due by March 15.
Students interested in the Tyler Fellows Program should email ugresearch@syr.edu, prepare a project proposal, and apply through one of two SOURCE deadlines: Summer 2025 applications are due by February 27, while Fall 2025 applications are due by April 3.
Fellows will engage in additional activities, including a “Research in Community” seminar with other university fellows and national participants from other institutions.
Erika Wilkens, assistant provost and executive director of Syracuse Abroad, expressed her enthusiasm: “We are delighted to have been awarded the Tyler Center grant and the ability to elevate our support for international student-driven discovery.” She added that it is an example of institutional collaboration advancing student global engagement goals.
Kate Hanson, SOURCE Director, stated: “The Tyler Center for Global Studies grant provides Syracuse undergraduate students with a new level of support for innovative international research.” She highlighted the partnership with Syracuse Abroad as an opportunity to promote research through various programs.
SOURCE offers assistance to students in developing research ideas, finding mentors, or preparing application materials. Students can contact SOURCE at ugresearch@syr.edu or call 315.443.2091.
