The Syracuse University Department of Drama is set to continue its 2024/2025 season with the play "A Walrus in the Body of a Crocodile" by MJ Kaufman. Directed by Daniella Caggiano, the performances will take place from February 21 to March 2 at the Storch Theatre, located within the Syracuse Stage/SU Drama Complex at 820 East Genesee Street. Tickets can be purchased through the Syracuse Stage Box Office online or by phone.
The play offers a farcical exploration of language and gender, presenting an absurd narrative where strangers on a train, a surreal support group, and a frat party intersect. It challenges societal roles and poses questions about self-definition. Director Daniella Caggiano highlights a key moment in the play: “There’s a moment in the play when a character says, ‘When you don’t make a choice about who you are, the world makes it for you.’ I’m hoping ‘Walrus’ will remind audiences that gender isn’t just something that gets assigned to you, it is something we can consider and create and personalize to make it truly our own.”
The cast includes Jude Chong, Maya Landry, G.B. Bellamy, Hazel Kinnersley, Mallika Cadin, and Harrison Wei as an understudy.
