Syracuse University has announced its intention to remain open and operational on Tuesday, February 18, 2025. The decision follows a thorough review of the Lake Effect Snow Warning and Cold Weather Warning currently in effect. The university is relying on the latest data from the National Weather Service and consulting with an independent meteorologist to assess weather conditions.
Despite this announcement, Syracuse University acknowledges that some individuals travel from outside the city and should exercise caution. "Faculty, graduate students who teach courses, and staff concerned about their commute should contact their department chair or supervisor, respectively, to coordinate alternative work arrangements," advises the university. Students with travel concerns are encouraged to communicate with their professors.
Should there be any changes in operating status, notifications will be disseminated through the University's emergency broadcast system under the notice SU WEATHER ALERT. To ensure receipt of these alerts, community members are reminded to keep their Orange Alert settings updated via MySlice.
SU WEATHER ALERT updates will be shared through various channels: text messages; campus TV monitors and websites; X accounts @SyracuseUNews and @SyracuseDPS; Facebook pages @SyracuseUniversityNews and @SyracuseDPS; as well as news.syr.edu, Syracuse.edu, WAER-FM/88.3 public radio station, and other local media outlets.
Only Syracuse University’s Internal Communications and Media Relations teams are authorized to issue official announcements regarding closings or schedule changes.
