The College of Arts and Sciences at Syracuse University has announced the addition of five new professors for the Spring 2025 semester. A&S Dean Behzad Mortazavi emphasized the significance of these appointments, stating, “I am delighted that these new faculty members are joining A&S, bringing their research specializations and teaching excellence to benefit our students and contribute to knowledge in service of the public good.” He added that their presence will aid in addressing contemporary challenges.
Li-En Jao joins as an associate professor of biology, affiliated with the BioInspired Institute. With a Ph.D. from Rutgers University, Jao specializes in cell biology and developmental biology among other areas. His instructional philosophy involves making abstract concepts tangible through examples and hands-on experiences.
Eun-Deok Kim takes on the role of assistant professor in biology. Holding a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin, Kim focuses on epigenetics and plant biology. His approach is to guide students in connecting knowledge to real-world challenges.
Chih Hung Lo becomes an assistant professor specializing in both biology and neuroscience. With a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, his work spans neurobiology and drug discovery fields. Lo emphasizes interdisciplinary learning to prepare future researchers.
Heather Meyer is appointed as an assistant professor affiliated with the BioInspired Institute. She earned her Ph.D. from Cornell University and specializes in plant biology and molecular genetics. Meyer's goal is to equip students with skills for observation and questioning.
Lastly, Caitlin Miller joins as a professor of practice at the Forensic and National Security Sciences Institute. A Syracuse University alumna with a Ph.D., she specializes in analytical chemistry among other fields, focusing on critical thinking for forensic science students.
