JaNeika James, an accomplished television producer and writer, will be the keynote speaker at Syracuse University's 21st Annual WellsLink Leadership Program's Transitions Ceremony on February 7. James, along with her twin sister JaSheika, has built a successful career in the television industry. She is known for her work as a supervising producer on FOX’s "Empire," co-executive producer on Netflix’s "True Story," HBO Max’s "Gossip Girl" reboot, and executive producer on Peacock’s "Bel-Air."
Reflecting on their journey from watching U.S. TV shows sent by their grandparents while living in Germany to making it big in Hollywood, JaNeika said, “Our story is an example of how dreams can be manifested." She emphasized the importance of having a clear vision and declaring one's intentions.
The ceremony honors WellsLink Scholars who have transitioned to their second year at the university. It is open to the entire University community, and attendees are encouraged to RSVP.
James attributes much of her success to her education at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. She noted that the school instilled an understanding of media's impact and responsibility: “It’s had an incredible impact on my career.”
Discussing inspiration from past TV shows, she cited "Living Single" as influential due to its representation of Black women leading independent lives: “'Living Single' allowed me and my twin sister to see a future version of ourselves.” This show inspired her aspirations within the industry.
For aspiring students attending the Transitions Ceremony, James aims to encourage them about their inner power: “I really want to encourage and remind them of the power they hold.” She also supports initiatives like Our Time Has Come Scholarship Program, hoping it aids students in pursuing education without financial constraints.
The event will recognize numerous scholars from various schools within Syracuse University who have successfully completed their first year.
