Kim McPherson, a former member of the Troy City Council, has been sentenced to one year of probation and fined $1,500 for identity theft. The charges stem from her actions during the 2021 elections when she cast absentee ballots in the names of other individuals.

The announcement was made by United States Attorney Carla B. Freedman and Craig L. Tremaroli, Special Agent in Charge of the Albany Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

McPherson was re-elected to the Troy City Council in 2021 after winning both the Working Families Party primary and the general election. In June 2022, she pleaded guilty to unlawfully possessing and using another person's identification. She admitted to casting an absentee ballot under another person's name during the primary election and doing so again with two different names in the general election.

Following her plea agreement, McPherson resigned from her position on the Troy City Council.

The FBI conducted an investigation into this case, which was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Barnett.
