Syracuse University is set to host its annual Service of Commemoration on March 18 at 4 p.m. in Hendricks Chapel. The event will honor students, faculty, staff, retirees, Trustees, and honorary degree recipients from the university and the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry who have passed away since January 1, 2024.
The ceremony will feature a reading of names of those who have died, along with candle lighting in their memory. The service will also include prayers, spoken remarks, and music. Communication Access Real-Time Translation (CART) and American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation will be available for attendees.
Brian Konkol, vice president and dean of Hendricks Chapel, emphasized the significance of the event: “As we honor those who embodied the spirit and soul of our campus community, our time of ritual and reflection can bring hope and healing.”
The service aligns with the Remembrance Scholars’ motto “Look Back, Act Forward,” encouraging attendees to remember those lost while acting forward in their memory.
Hendricks Chapel invites all members of the community to attend this moment of reflection. For more information about the service or to submit names for commemoration by March 13, contact chapel@syr.edu or call 315.443.2901.
