The City of Syracuse Department of Water has identified issues with water sampling conducted in homes with lead services during the first half of 2024. The department discovered that some samples were not administered correctly by its employees. This lapse in following required sampling protocols may have contributed to elevated lead levels detected in those samples.

In response, two employees from the Water Department have been placed on administrative leave while further investigations are carried out.

"As part of an ongoing review, the City of Syracuse Department of Water has determined some water samples collected at homes with lead services in the first half of 2024 were administered improperly by department employees," stated the department. "Required sampling protocols were not followed which may explain the elevated levels of lead in those samples."
