Gov. Kathy Hochul's recent State of the State address has been met with skepticism by Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay. In his response, Barclay criticized the governor's optimistic portrayal of New York's current situation, attributing issues such as increased expenses and public safety concerns to six years of one-party rule.
Barclay emphasized the need for "real, permanent solutions" to tackle problems driving families and businesses away from the state. He expressed caution over Hochul's claims that affordability could be improved without addressing what he described as "out-of-control state spending." According to Barclay, while Hochul proposed ambitious plans, there was no assurance that new taxes would be avoided.
Barclay also highlighted concerns regarding the financial implications of meeting climate goals set by Majority lawmakers, which he argued would require substantial funding and lead to higher utility prices for families. He urged the governor to consider these issues in her upcoming Executive Budget address.
Addressing criminal justice reforms, Barclay stated that unless policies like New York’s sanctuary status, Raise the Age, and Bail Reform are revisited, public safety will remain at risk. He called for urgent reforms to restore accountability within the criminal justice system.
Looking ahead to 2025, Barclay sees an opportunity for change in New York. He urged a departure from current practices to make the state more affordable and secure for its residents. "It is time to deliver the changes New Yorkers deserve and create lasting solutions that will strengthen our state for years to come,” he concluded.
