Syracuse launches Digital Inclusion Week focusing on equitable internet access

Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh, alongside community partners, has declared October 8-10 as Digital Inclusion Week. The initiative involves Syracuse Northeast Community Center, InterFaith Works, Literacy CNY, and CNY Digital Inclusion Coalition. These organizations aim to bridge the digital divide in Syracuse by offering education and services that ensure access to digital tools for all residents.

"Digital inclusion is more than having access to high-speed internet. Residents also need access to digital devices and training on how to use them," said Mayor Ben Walsh. He emphasized the role of community-driven programs in increasing literacy and reducing technology barriers.

The event coincides with a national effort to highlight the importance of digital equity, which includes affordable internet, device access, and skills training. This year's theme is "Stronger Together: Mobilizing Towards Sustainability."

The Syracuse Northeast Community Center has appointed a Digital Empowerment Manager who provides citywide training and technical assistance. The center also offers free Wi-Fi in partnership with the City of Syracuse.

InterFaith Works runs a program called Digital Inclusion for Older Adults, assisting seniors in using technology safely. Literacy CNY offers a similar program using volunteers to help individuals with devices and internet navigation across several counties.

CNY Digital Inclusion Coalition focuses on understanding regional challenges to digital inclusion and supports policy development for improved access.

Jenn Tifft from the Mayor’s Office highlighted the city's Surge Link program that provides affordable high-speed internet at home. She stated that investment in digital literacy enhances the value of having internet access.

Earlier this year, Syracuse received $10.8 million from the Governor’s ConnectALL Municipal Infrastructure Grant Program to expand Surge Link's coverage by over 13,000 households across various neighborhoods identified as needing greater support due to poverty and unemployment rates.

Throughout the week, information about partner services and Surge Link sign-up details will be shared on social media using #DIW2024.
