Syracuse appoints Mujahid Muhammad as lead paint program coordinator

Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh announced the appointment of Mujahid Muhammad as Lead Paint Program Coordinator for the City of Syracuse Division of Code Enforcement on June 28, 2024. In this capacity, Muhammad will oversee the City’s Lead Paint Program and ensure compliance with lead code violations under the Lead Abatement and Control Ordinance.

Muhammad's responsibilities will include supervising inspections for lead-based paint violations, reviewing reports and abatement schedules, and investigating specific issues that require on-site visits. Additionally, he will serve as a representative for Neighborhood and Business Development to explain policies related to lead paint enforcement. His role involves engaging with property owners, city residents, and community groups about violations, fines, and concerns regarding lead paint.

Moreover, Muhammad will conduct Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Dust Sampling Technician training courses and recommend new or enhanced initiatives for lead paint control.

Muhammad brings 15 years of experience working with the City of Syracuse. He previously served as a Code Enforcement Housing Inspector where he ensured residential homes complied with city ordinances. His duties included monitoring vacant properties and citing them for trash, debris, and overgrowth violations. Prior to this role, he was a Laborer for the Department of Public Works performing maintenance duties in City Hall. He has also worked as a Community Service Officer for the Department of Police.

Currently, Muhammad is pursuing a degree in Humanities from Onondaga Community College.
