Seven recruits have embarked on their journey to become campus peace officers under the Syracuse University Department of Public Safety (DPS). The recruits were officially sworn into the DPS Campus Peace Officer Academy by Syracuse Police Department Chief Joseph L. Cecile on March 20. Collaborating with the Syracuse Police Department, the ceremony was seen as an endorsement of the joint law enforcement efforts within the university area, granting the recruits the authority to enforce both New York State law and local ordinances upon successful completion of the academy.

The recruits include Mariyah Byrd, Matthew Calley, Jesus Gorra, Brennan Kreis, Jonathan Pizarro, Misty Stephens, and Megan Healey. While Healey will proceed to Onondaga Community College, the others will continue training at Syracuse University.

"Starting at the academy is where the foundation of a great officer is built. It’s not just about learning the law—it’s about discipline, integrity, and commitment to serving the community. Every recruit who walks through these doors has the potential to make a real difference. We are excited for them to start this journey," said Sgt. Adam Wheeler, the academy's director.

This marks the ninth iteration of the DPS holding its own peace officer academy. During training, recruits will undergo technical, physical, classroom, and field-based assessments. Graduates who complete the academy will then move on to field training with field training officers for an additional 12 to 14 weeks.

Craig Stone, associate vice president and chief of the Department of Public Safety, addressed the audience comprising friends and families of the recruits. "We are excited to welcome new members to our team who will assist us in keeping the campus community safe. We expect these new recruits to become leaders in the university community and strive to become great listeners, communicators and collaborative problem-solvers."

The Syracuse University's Department of Public Safety offers 24/7 protection to the campus. Through its patrols and crime prevention initiatives, DPS collaborates with students, faculty, and staff to identify and mitigate crime risks and hazards.
