The Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) at Syracuse University Libraries is currently accepting applications for the Alexander N. Charters Adult Education Grants-in-Aid program for the 2025-26 period. Applications are open until March 31, and the grant awards can reach up to $5,000, contingent on the specifics of each proposal. These grants are intended for scholars or practitioners conducting research using SCRC’s adult education collections. Decisions regarding awards will be announced by April 30. Further details about the application process can be found on the Libraries’ website.
Alexander N. Charters, who lived from 1916 to 2018, was an expert in adult and continuing education recognized internationally. The library has curated historical documents and university records dating back to 1949 that include manuscripts, prints, visuals, and media materials related to adult education.
This collection is known as the Alexander N. Charters Library for Educators of Adults and acknowledges Charters’ contributions towards promoting and expanding SCRC’s adult education holdings. Through his generosity, SCRC annually offers grants to one or more researchers interested in utilizing these collections for their work. The grant amount varies based on the scope of research outlined in each applicant's proposal.
