Syracuse University is already celebrating Black History Month 2025 with events that will extend into March and throughout the year. The theme for this year's observance is "African Americans and Labor," which examines various aspects of work within Black life and culture.
Cydavia Patterson, Barner-McDuffie House program coordinator and member of the Black History Month Committee, shared insights on the planning process: “This year’s Black History Month planning has been a labor of love. The committee has put in long hours, lots of emails and phone calls and many back-to-back meetings. We hope this month inspires you to celebrate your heritage, revel in your history, practice cultural wellness and look for those who you can reach out to and reach back to.”
The university's community is invited to participate in programs and discussions from January 22 through March 2. Lael Pierce, assistant director of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs, emphasized the importance of recognizing Black history: “Black history is deeply ingrained in the foundation of this country, not just this month but year-round. We honor the bravery, talent and contributions of the men and women who’ve excelled and enacted change in our society. Black history is American history.”
Highlighted events include a BHM Information Fair on January 31, a Kickoff event on the same day, "Hair Me Out" on February 3, a Basketball Classic on February 19, Cusecon on February 22, a closing service featuring gospel artist Richard Tolbert Jr. on February 23, and a Closing Ceremony on March 2.
