Six faculty members have been elected to the Provost’s Advisory Committee on Promotion and Tenure. The elections took place in Fall 2024.
The committee serves as a body of Universitywide faculty representatives, advising the Vice Chancellor, Provost, and Chief Academic Officer. Their role is to ensure consistent promotion and tenure processes while upholding high academic standards. Members are required to be tenured full professors and serve two-year staggered terms without eligibility for consecutive terms.
The newly elected members include Dympna Callaghan, William Safire Professor of Modern Letters and University Professor from the College of Arts and Sciences; Qinru Qiu, director of the electrical engineering and computer science graduate program at the College of Engineering and Computer Science; Merril Silverstein, Marjorie Cantor Professor of Aging Studies at Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics; Aileen Gallagher, associate dean for academic affairs at S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications; Natarajan Balasubramanian, Albert & Betty Hill Endowed Professor at Martin J. Whitman School of Management; and Emily Stokes-Rees, Iris Magidson Endowed Professor of Design Leadership and director at the School of Design in the College of Visual and Performing Arts.
Committee members review promotion and tenure cases that meet specific criteria, such as substantial disagreement between recommendation layers or a strong probability of a negative determination. They provide an advisory vote to the provost but do not issue formal reports or consider appeals.
Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs Jamie Winders convenes the committee. Provost Lois Agnew chairs it, with Vice President for Research Duncan Brown serving in an ex-officio capacity.
