On January 14, 2025, discussions emerged about the potential impact of Elon Musk acquiring TikTok on U.S.-China relations. Dimitar Gueorguiev, an associate professor at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, provided his insights on this speculative scenario.
Professor Gueorguiev emphasized that while the proposal is speculative, it should not be dismissed. He noted President-elect Trump's interest in resolving the TikTok dispute politically and suggested that Musk could facilitate such an outcome due to his financial resources and business ties in China through Tesla. Gueorguiev also mentioned Musk's prominence in the social media industry via X as a factor that positions him as a potential candidate for brokering a deal.
“Musk’s recognition and favorability in China could render the arrangement more appealing to Beijing,” Gueorguiev stated. However, he cautioned that such a move would raise concerns among Americans and the U.S. national security establishment due to Musk's expanding business and political influence. Gueorguiev pointed out that these developments could lead to significant conflicts of interest requiring scrutiny.
