Syracuse University Libraries' Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) is set to unveil its Spring 2025 exhibition titled "The Making of the Medieval Book." The exhibition will open on January 27 on the sixth floor of Bird Library.
Curated by Irina Savinetskaya, who specializes in early to pre-20th century collections, the exhibition will display a selection of Western European medieval manuscripts from the 13th to the 16th centuries. It will also include examples of bookmaking from Persia, Japan, and Ethiopia. Additionally, visitors can view early printed and modern books that draw inspiration from medieval book design.
Medieval manuscripts are often admired for their hand-painted illuminations and decorated bindings. These works are typically considered esoteric and precious, making them seem inaccessible to non-specialists. However, they offer more than just visual appeal; they provide insights into various aspects such as natural history, trade, religious movements, and daily life during their time. The exhibition aims to explore how these books were crafted and utilized by different individuals and communities throughout history.
An opening reception for the exhibition is scheduled for February 6 from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., also on the sixth floor of Bird Library. Interested attendees can register online for the event. Communication Access Realtime Translation services will be available at the reception. Those needing additional accommodations should contact mlwagh@syr.edu by January 20.
