Erica Kiduko, a graduate student at Syracuse University, has utilized the Mark and Pearle Clements Internship Award to advance her research on gender-based violence in Tanzania. Kiduko, who is pursuing a master's degree in Pan-African studies, focused her thesis on the status of women in Tanzania and the National Plan of Action aimed at preventing violence against women.

"I was working on a project that is my passion, and I applied for an internship that captured my goals and my passions," Kiduko says.

The Clements Internship Awards offer financial assistance ranging from $1,500 to $6,000 to juniors, seniors, and graduate students seeking unique internship opportunities. This support helps cover expenses related to travel, accommodations, materials, or living costs associated with internships.

Kiduko's thesis titled "Reckoning an Icon: Exploring Scholarship and Activism of [Kenyan professor] Mĩcere Gĩthae Mũgo" examines the ongoing challenges faced by women in Tanzania despite existing protective measures. Her work highlights the lack of awareness among citizens about the National Plan of Action and insufficient enforcement of laws designed to protect women and girls.

Through a self-secured internship with the Global Peace Foundation—one of the organizations involved in launching the National Plan—Kiduko explored these issues further. As a program officer for their Uniting to End Violence Against Women in Football initiative, she worked with female soccer players aged 16 to 25. The initiative aimed to address gender-based violence within women's soccer while challenging societal norms that hinder victims from reporting incidents.

"The initiative was trying to promote women’s empowerment by preventing gender-based violence while creating a safe environment for everyone to play their sport," Kiduko says.

During her internship, Kiduko facilitated workshops educating participants about violence risks and response strategies. A key outcome was developing an app allowing players to anonymously report violent incidents.

"It can be really hard for these players to report these incidents. Soccer could be their entire life and they’re afraid of being taken off the team for reporting an attack," Kiduko says.

Reflecting on her experience post-graduation from Syracuse University, Kiduko plans to continue addressing gender violence through community-driven approaches. She expresses gratitude for receiving the Clements Internship Award which enabled her exploration into various forms of activism.

"Once I graduate I still plan on exploring this community-driven approach... I'm so grateful," she concludes.
