Syracuse University and Gen.G, a global esports organization, have announced a multi-year partnership aimed at enhancing student engagement and supporting the university's unique esports communications and management bachelor's program. This collaboration will introduce students to the Gen.G Practicum Abroad, an intensive three-week study opportunity in South Korea. The initiative will also bring Gen.G’s Campus Takeover conference to Syracuse, coinciding with the launch of a new esports hub at the Schine Student Center.
The esports bachelor’s program at Syracuse is the first of its kind in the United States, offered jointly by the Newhouse School of Public Communications and Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics. Joey Gawrysiak, executive director of the esports degree program, stated: “As a leader in esports education, it is essential for Syracuse to deliver to the right mix of academic excellence and hands-on experiences to our students.”
In South Korea, students will participate in custom programming led by Gen.G professionals, which includes mentorship from industry leaders, lectures, networking opportunities, and cultural immersion activities. They will also visit competitive organizations and gaming studios.
The Campus Takeover event will take place on campus in fall 2025. This free-to-enter conference aims to support the esports ecosystem through panels and seminars featuring industry professionals. It will be the first event at Syracuse to include a business case study competition.
Arnold Hur, CEO of Gen.G said: “Syracuse and Gen.G believe education plays a critical role in the future development of esports and gaming globally." He emphasized their commitment to providing hands-on experiences for students aiming for careers in this field.
Previously, Gen.G hosted industry lectures for Syracuse's Department of Sport Management during significant events like the League of Legends World Championships in Berlin. The company has pledged $1 million over ten years through its foundation to support educational initiatives within esports.
Gen.G operates various teams across different games including Overwatch League's Seoul Dynasty and League of Legends Champions Korea. Their global presence extends through offices in Los Angeles, Seoul, and Shanghai.
