For over two decades, Professor Sudha Raj has been a guiding force in the field of nutrition and dietetics at Syracuse University's Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics. Her dedication to teaching and mentoring aspiring dietetic professionals has earned her the Lifetime Achievement Award from Dietitians in Integrative and Functional Medicine (DIFM), a subgroup of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

The award was presented to Raj during the 2024 Food and Nutrition Conference held in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Manju Karkare, a registered dietitian nutritionist who nominated Raj for this honor, handed her the award. Lynn Brann, associate professor and chair of the Department of Nutrition and Food Studies, praised Raj's approach: “Sudha brings a whole-person approach to her teaching and mentoring of students and colleagues.”

Expressing gratitude upon receiving the award, Raj stated, “I am honored and humbled to receive the DIFM Lifetime Achievement award.” She acknowledged those who have supported her throughout her career, including colleagues, students, family members, as well as those who nominated her.

According to DIFM's website, this accolade is meant for individuals whose lifetime contributions have significantly advanced integrative and functional medicine principles within nutrition. The recognition highlights excellence through innovative work that peers regard as exemplary.

Raj's influence extends beyond Syracuse University; she played a pivotal role in pioneering studies on dietary acculturation among Asian Indian immigrants in the U.S. Additionally, she co-founded an interest group for Asian Indians within dietetics under the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Brann further commended Raj’s leadership: “Due to her leadership... several faculty attended multi-day training to integrate these concepts into our courses.” Monique Richard also wrote one of two recommendation letters supporting Raj’s nomination. Richard emphasized Raj’s impact on both professional peers and students alike.

Despite this milestone achievement marking an important chapter in her career journey—one filled with mentorships alongside unique contributions—Raj remains committed to continuing her work within integrative nutritional practices while nurturing future generations entering this profession.

“My deepest thank you goes out,” said Raj acknowledging support received over years from various colleagues across disciplines involved with integrative functional medicine specialties within broader contexts surrounding nutritional sciences education/training programs offered by institutions like Syracuse University or Falk College fostering academic interests therein too."
