Syracuse University hosts diverse events marking fall semester highlights

The University of Syracuse has been bustling with activities and events as the fall semester progresses. The campus officially began LGBTQ+ History Month on October 2 at the Intercultural Collective. Students have been encouraged to capture their experiences and share photos with Syracuse University News.

In celebration of National Coming Out Day, students, along with Otto the Orange, participated in a Chalk the Quad event. Indigenous Peoples Day was marked by students gathering to make traditional strawberry juice.

A variety of other events have taken place across campus. The Catholic Center organized an apple-picking trip at Navarino Orchard, while Syracuse University Sustainability hosted a compost and plant propagation event in Schine. Additionally, the men's soccer team volunteered at Allen Road Elementary School in North Syracuse.

Family Weekend 2024 saw families participating enthusiastically, while potential employers met with students during the University's Career Fair on September 24 at the JMA Wireless Dome. Meanwhile, legendary musicians Billy Joel and Sting are set to perform there in April 2025.

Retired United States Air Force Colonel John L. Litzenberger was honored at the 59th LetterWinners of Distinction Celebration. In sports news, Syracuse women's soccer coach Nicky Thrasher Adams introduced seven-year-old Lilianna Cavallo as a new team member through Team IMPACT.

The CNY Book Buddies program kicked off with contributions from football Head Coach Fran Brown and players volunteering at Dr. King Elementary School. Furthermore, Savion Pollard was recognized as Hometown Hero during a football game against Stanford on September 20.

Latine Heritage Month commenced with an opening ceremony co-sponsored by the Student Association on September 16 in Schine Student Center. During CBT weekend, a charity game featured Syracuse athletics legends and a panel discussion focused on empowering women in sports.

Hendricks Chapel provided an opportunity for reflection on September 11 to mark its anniversary, while Jamieson R. Ritter's life was celebrated during a football game where he was honored posthumously as Hometown Hero.

Syracuse Football initiated a new tradition called Quad Walk under Coach Fran Brown's leadership on August 31. The U.S. Small Business Administration visited to learn about veteran entrepreneurship programs offered by IVMF.

Maxwell’s Executive Degree Programs welcomed students with a BBQ featuring Otto the Orange, while creative arts therapy students created body maps during their residency.

U.S Navy Rear Admiral Josh Jackson and Assistant Secretary Franklin Parker discussed military-higher education partnerships with Chancellor Kent Syverud during Navy Week Syracuse activities that included performances by U.S Navy Band Northeast for VPA students.

Newhouse 3 offered unique views captured by student photographers like Michael Sullivan '28 who documented these vibrant moments across campus throughout Welcome Week when international newcomers gathered for dinners or orientation leaders assisted fresh arrivals moving into residence halls amidst rain-soaked conditions that didn't dampen spirits but rather filled them anew upon returning after summer break heralding another academic year ahead full of promise amid autumnal hues now coloring this storied institution anew each day witnessed here unfolding still...
