The University is set to commemorate the 36th anniversary of the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland, which occurred on December 21, 1988. The Remembrance and Lockerbie Scholars have organized a series of events from October 20 to October 26 to honor the memory of the 270 victims and educate about terrorism.

Remembrance Week will feature various activities that are open to the public. These include visual displays, musical performances, discussions, and ceremonies aimed at reflecting on past losses and inspiring positive actions.

Throughout the week, an Empty Seats Display will be set up at Kenneth A. Shaw Quadrangle as a tribute to Syracuse University students who were aboard Pan Am Flight 103. On Wednesday, October 23, Remembrance Scholars will participate in "Sitting in Solidarity" by sitting in these chairs for 35 minutes.

On Sunday, October 20, Hendricks Chapel will host the world premiere of “Each Moment Radiant,” a chamber work by composer Kurt Erickson and poet Brian Turner. This event is part of the Malmgren Concert Series and includes performances by Setnor School of Music faculty and guest musicians.

Later that day, Erickson and Turner will lead a discussion titled “Healing Trauma Through Poetry and Music” at the National Veterans Resource Center. These events are co-sponsored by several university departments and organizations.

A candlelight vigil at the Place of Remembrance will officially begin Remembrance Week on Sunday evening.

Other notable events include an Act Forward Symposium on Thursday, October 24 at Huntington Beard Crouse Hall where scholars will present community outreach projects. This is followed by a Celebration of Life featuring music, poetry, art, and dance.

On Friday, October 25, there will be a panel discussion titled “In The Aftermath: Documenting and Researching Victim Support Groups” held both in-person at Bird Library and via Zoom. It focuses on preserving records related to disaster aftermaths. Later that day, a Rose-Laying Ceremony at the Place of Remembrance will pay tribute to those lost in the bombing.

The week concludes with a Remembrance Scholar Convocation at Hendricks Chapel to honor current scholars.
