A $1 million pledge from an anonymous donor family to Hendricks Chapel at Syracuse University has sparked significant generosity from others, resulting in a successful fundraising campaign. The donor family offered an additional $1 million if their initial challenge was met, leading over 2,500 donors to contribute $1,757,496 since last March. This brings the total funds raised to more than $3.7 million.
Chancellor Kent Syverud highlighted the importance of Hendricks Chapel: “Hendricks Chapel is such an important part of the Syracuse experience for not only our students and alumni, but for faculty, staff, parents and friends.” He emphasized that the support reflects the chapel's role in fostering community on campus.
Brian Konkol, vice president and dean of Hendricks Chapel, expressed gratitude: “For Hendricks Chapel to be on the receiving end of such transformative generosity is a remarkable blessing.” He acknowledged contributions from student leaders and campus partners.
The chapel has been integral to student life since its dedication in 1930. It serves as a hub for faith communities and supports various programs. The recent funds will enhance core services including religious life involvement, leadership development, interfaith dialogue, student support initiatives like the Student Opportunity Fund and Food Pantry, and music and arts programs.
The donor family includes alumni who have personal ties to Hendricks Chapel. They aimed to inspire others with their unrestricted gift. A family member stated: “The focused effort required to learn a field of endeavor during your college years needs to be balanced with a constant reminder that each field’s ultimate purpose is to advance goodness in the world.”
