With midterm exams approaching and World Mental Health Day on October 10, students are encouraged to focus on managing their mental health. The Barnes Center at The Arch offers various resources to support student wellness throughout the year.
Carrie Brown, counseling director at the Barnes Center, emphasizes a holistic approach: “The Barnes Center is such a rich resource for health and wellness, and we know from our students that mental wellness is most effective when approached from a holistic perspective that focuses on the connection between the mind and body.”
The center provides individual and group therapy, crisis support, and referrals for specialized treatment. Brown explains, “Barnes Center Counseling offers therapeutic support through individual and group therapy offerings as well as crisis and emergency support. We have multiple groups that teach skills and techniques to help manage anxiety and emotional regulation.”
Students can also access psychiatry services by referral from the center's healthcare teams. Activities like mindfulness meditation through Headspace, stress reduction programs, pet therapy sessions, and more are available to enhance mental health.
For those in need of immediate assistance due to a mental health crisis or other urgent concerns, Syracuse University offers free confidential services 24/7 at 315.443.8000.
