Syracuse University’s Rugby Club Sports team recently played against the Seapoint Rugby Club in Killiney, County Dublin, Ireland. The sport of rugby, characterized by athletes running with the ball in hand without pads or helmets and its close-contact nature, has seen a rise in global popularity over recent decades.

Mark Nash ’23 G’24, a member of Syracuse University Rugby Club Sports team, commented on his experience: “I enjoy the sense of community and belonging. I also appreciate the opportunity to play competitive sports in college. This is not something that my friends at other schools have the opportunity to do, besides the ones playing NCAA sports.”

A notable aspect of the Syracuse University Rugby Club Sports team is their partnership with Leinster Rugby. Recognized as an international leader in club sports, Leinster Rugby has achieved numerous competition successes and stands as one of the top teams in European rugby. This partnership provides Syracuse athletes with exclusive coaching, skill development opportunities, and competitions.

“We are in collaboration with the most successful youth and player development program in the world. How special is that?” said Bob Wilson, Syracuse University Rugby Club Sports team coach and faculty advisor. He added, “We have a professional coach from that environment working with us on a full-time basis, bringing techniques and culture which have supported successful performance at the highest levels. The collaboration has already created interest and engagement in the growing U.S. and global rugby communities.”

A highlight of the 2023-24 season was a trip to Ireland for further collaboration with Leinster Rugby. During Spring Break, team members attended sessions led by Leinster coaches, participated in rigorous training schedules, and observed international competitions while exploring Ireland’s culture and landscapes. Previous trips have included Argentina, England, Portugal, Scotland, and Spain.

“The trip to Ireland supports Syracuse University’s goal to provide an international experience for all students,” said Wilson. “The Syracuse University Rugby Club Sports team has enhanced student life for over 50 years through challenging athletic experiences as part of an enthusiastic group.”

Upcoming events for Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 will be listed on the Syracuse University Event Calendar. Students interested in joining can learn more on the Syracuse University Competitive Club Sports and Esports website or by visiting the Syracuse University Ruby Club Sports team website.
