Since the full lapse of the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) at the end of May, Congressman Brandon Williams (NY-22) has continued to advocate for the passage of H.R. 8466, the Affordable Connectivity Program Improvement and Extension Act of 2024. This legislation aims to replenish the Affordable Connectivity Fund with $6 billion at no additional cost to taxpayers.
The effort has garnered support from eleven cosponsors in the House of Representatives, including:
- Rep. Anthony D’Esposito (NY-4)
- Rep. Andrew Garbarino (NY-2)
- Rep. Jen Kiggans (VA-2)
- Rep. Michelle Steel (CA-45)
- Rep. Tom Kean (NJ-7)
- Del. James Moylan (Guam, at-large)
- Rep. Marc Molinaro (NY-19)
- Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11)
- Rep. Mike Lawler (NY-17)
- Rep. Tony Gonzales (TX-23)
Additionally, over a dozen broadband providers have volunteered to offer their “current ACP subscribers and other eligible households a high-speed internet plan for $30 per month or less, with no fees and data caps, until the end of 2024,” according to the White House.
These providers include Allo Fiber, Altafiber (and Hawaiian Telcom), Astound Broadband, AT&T, Comcast, Cox, IdeaTek, Mediacom, MLGC, Optimum, Spectrum (Charter Communications), Starry, Verizon, and VTel; collectively covering up to 10 million ACP households.
Rep. Williams issued a statement in response: “This is a commendable example of the kind of leadership we need both from industry and here in Congress—leadership that puts people first. Our fight isn’t over yet, and I hope that more Representatives will join me in doing right by the millions of Americans who have relied on this program to work, study, and communicate online amidst financial strain.”
