Syracuse University Student Employment ('Cuse Works) has announced the winners of the 2023-24 National Student Employment Week awards. Each April, 'Cuse Works celebrates and honors student employees and their supervisors by presenting several awards, including Undergraduate Student of the Year, Graduate Student Employee of the Year, Supervisor of the Year, and Department of the Year.
This year, campus community members were encouraged to nominate individuals who have significantly improved the student experience through their dedication and hard work. A total of 65 students and nearly 20 supervisors were nominated for these awards. The winners were selected by the Student Employment Recognition Committee.
Jovanni Mosca was named Undergraduate Student Employee of the Year. Nominated by members of Student Engagement, Mosca is described as "one of the most dedicated and driven employees" within his team. He mentors about 20 student staff members in his role as a student lead with Event and Technical Services (ETS) in Student Engagement. Additionally, he has developed innovative ideas to simplify ETS processes and educate organizations using their services.
Shivani Sadare received the Graduate Student Employee of the Year award. She was nominated by both the Center for International Services and Syracuse University Libraries for her roles in each department. At the Center for International Services, she impressed staff with her data analysis and communication skills while managing over 100 group participants' schedules as an English Conversation Group coordinator. Syracuse University Libraries praised her reliability, responsiveness, quality work production, and insight into international student experiences.
Jeremy Pope was honored as Supervisor of the Year for his role at Bird Library Access Services. Nominated by numerous student employees, Pope is recognized for fostering a sense of community among all employees. He oversees undergraduate and graduate student employees as well as library staff while currently handling duties typically managed by two supervisors.
The Barnes Center at The Arch Recreation team was awarded Department of the Year under Matthew Hackett's direction. As one of the largest student employers on campus, they hire hundreds of students in various roles such as lifeguards, fitness attendants, referees, challenge course facilitators, and guest services attendants. The department provides wellness services daily to faculty, staff, and students while teaching professional skills like leadership and teamwork to its student employees.
