Syracuse Firefighters were alerted to a fire in the 400 block of Burnet Ave, with callers reporting smoke visible from I-690. Firefighters arrived to find heavy black smoke billowing from the building, with fire showing at the rear as well. As reported, "A signal ‘99’ was transmitted, indicating a working fire."
Teams of firefighters quickly began efforts to combat the fire, with some stretching hoses into the building while others conducted thorough searches of the large, mixed-use structure. Despite the challenges posed by the building's layout, firefighters were able to extinguish a large amount of fire within 10 minutes, with all occupants safely evacuated prior to their arrival.
As the situation seemed to be under control in one part of the building, another fire started near the roof area, leading firefighters to discover flames in a void space under the roof. The arduous task of exposing and extinguishing these flames required additional fire companies to be called to the scene. "The fire was declared out after approximately 60 minutes."
The building sustained damage to both its interior on the first floor and its exterior and roof. Syracuse Fire Investigators are currently working to determine the origin and cause of the fire, with the investigation still ongoing. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported to civilians or firefighters involved in the incident.
A total of 49 Fire Department personnel, including command and support staff, responded to the scene. Various agencies such as Syracuse Fire Department Ambulance, Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross also provided assistance. The article concludes with a note of gratitude to the partners who responded to the incident.
