In an effort to enhance accessibility and inclusivity on campus, the Office of Campus Planning, Design and Construction (CPDC) at Syracuse University has been actively working on a series of projects as part of the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA) Strategic Plan.

Pete Sala, vice president and chief campus facilities officer, emphasized the importance of prioritizing accessibility in all campus upgrades, stating, “As CPDC, we take very seriously the need to incorporate enhanced access into all upgrades to current facilities and the design and construction of new facilities." Sala also expressed pride in the team's work in continuing to prioritize accessibility and inclusivity, with a commitment to further meet the needs of all campus community members.

Among the notable projects completed during the 2023-24 academic year were renovations at the Allyn Innovation Center, which included accessible entries and an auditorium at Link Hall, comprehensive accessibility updates at Newhouse, elevator installations at Syracuse Stage, and ADA improvements at the JMA Wireless Dome. These initiatives aimed at creating more inclusive spaces for all members of the campus community.

Additionally, ongoing renovations in residence halls like Haven, Dellplain, and Watson have provided CPDC with the opportunity to design more accessible spaces for students. Sala highlighted the creation of specific rooms for students with mobility needs, installation of bed shakers for deaf students, and the introduction of the first low-stimulus room on campus at Dellplain Hall, catering to students who require a quiet environment.

Furthermore, CPDC's involvement in the renovation of 113 Euclid Avenue, the expanded home to the Native Student Program, showcased a commitment to accessibility. Mary Grace A. Almandrez, Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion, noted that incorporating accessibility into CPDC projects aligns with the university's commitment to disability access and the DEIA Strategic Plan's goal of an inclusive understanding of accessibility.

Almandrez emphasized, “The ‘understanding of accessibility’ centers on the idea that people with disabilities experience no barriers to accessing or participating in a space, program or service." The various projects undertaken by CPDC underscore Syracuse University's dedication to creating a more accessible and equitable campus for all individuals.
