WASHINGTON — Today, Congressman Brandon Williams (NY-22) has put forth a new bill aimed at enhancing security measures at VA medical facilities across the nation. The proposed legislation, H.R. 7765, titled the VA Security Screening Pilot Program Act, focuses on upgrading security technology to better protect both employees and patients within these facilities.

The bill's primary objective is to implement a pilot program that would utilize weapon screening technology at the main entrance of each VA medical center within a designated Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) over a two-year period. Congressman Williams emphasized the necessity of this initiative, highlighting the strain that outdated security protocols place on VA police personnel, who are frequently understaffed. He expressed concern over the escalating incidents of violent crime within VA facilities and the alarming prevalence of suicides on VA campuses.

In his statement, Congressman Williams underscored the importance of prioritizing the safety and well-being of veterans, stating, "Our veterans gave their best to this country. This country owes every single veteran its very best in return." He stressed the urgent need for Congress to take significant steps towards ensuring the protection and support of those who have served in the military.

As the bill progresses, feedback from veterans and facility staff will be crucial in determining the most effective strategies for implementing weapon screening technology to bolster security at VA facilities. Congressman Williams firmly believes that this legislation represents a vital step in the right direction to honor the commitment made to the men and women who have served in the armed forces.
