Serving as a peer mentor to Syracuse University’s undergraduate women of color means the world to Kamille Montgomery ’24. Montgomery, along with her fellow student mentors in the Dimensions Mentoring Program, a peer-to-peer group aimed at supporting and empowering women of color in their college journeys, have been making a significant impact on campus.
Montgomery emphasizes the importance of representation in mentoring, stating, “Dimensions offers a support system of people who are going through the same journey together. If I can provide advice and guidance for incoming first-year students, that’s such an important way to help out. Dimensions offers an opportunity to build those relationships and make students feel like they’re not alone on their journeys.”
The Dimensions Mentoring Program focuses on helping first-year and transfer women of color adjust to college life through engaging programs and meaningful mentorship. The group fosters a sense of sisterhood among its members and helps them enhance their leadership and professional development skills through weekly meetings covering various important topics.
Montgomery, an early childhood and special education major in the School of Education, believes in the power of peer mentoring and the impact it can have on students. This Friday, Dimensions will host a Women’s History Month reception, providing a platform to celebrate the achievements and contributions of women.
In an interview with SU News, Montgomery shared insights into the profound influence of Dimensions, her passion for education, and her future plans to utilize her degree in the City of Syracuse through the Baldanza Fellows program.
