Chancellor Kent Syverud | Syracuse University
Chancellor Syverud, in a recent update to the University Senate, shared several significant developments. Firstly, plans were unveiled for the construction of two new residence halls, the first in at least 15 years. The Chancellor highlighted that one of the halls will be located on Ostrom Avenue across from Thornden Park, with the project currently in the design phase and construction set to commence later this year. Another residence hall will replace the Marion and Kimmel halls, with details regarding size and timeline still pending evaluation.
The Chancellor emphasized the importance of student input in the project, mentioning that listening sessions have already been conducted to ensure the new facilities meet students' needs, involving various student groups and leaders. These new projects supplement existing plans to convert the Sheraton Hotel into a residence hall and integrate 727 South Crouse into the university's housing stock.
In addition to the housing developments, Chancellor Syverud introduced two-time Syracuse graduate and iSchool Professor Jeff Rubin as the new senior vice president for digital transformation and chief digital officer. Recognizing Rubin's successful background in technology and digital innovation, the Chancellor expressed confidence in his ability to lead the university towards becoming a digital and technology leader.
Furthermore, Chancellor Syverud took the opportunity to acknowledge the achievements of Syracuse's coaches, praising ACC Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year, Felisha Legette-Jack, and men’s basketball Coach Adrian Autry for their leadership and successes in their respective seasons.
In closing his update, Chancellor Syverud expressed pride in the accomplishments of the university's athletic teams and the progress being made in housing and technology leadership.
