Jackson Capenos, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, has taken on the role of school certifying official at Syracuse University's Office of Veteran Success. Raised in Penneville, New York, Capenos developed a strong work ethic through family and community activities. His decision to join the Marines was influenced by his family's history of military service.

Capenos served as an amphibious assault vehicle crewman during his time in the Marines. He focused on ensuring safety through detailed inspections of vehicles used for transporting infantry from ships to shore. After being medically separated in 2014, he pursued higher education at SUNY Oswego, earning a degree in psychology with an emphasis on military and veteran mental health.

Following graduation, Capenos moved to Colorado Springs but returned to New York due to financial constraints brought on by COVID-19. His journey led him to Syracuse University where he now helps student veterans navigate their education benefits.

“When I was transitioning, I didn’t have much support,” Jackson says. “Now, I get to be that person for others."

Capenos' mission is to ensure veterans feel supported throughout their educational journey and life after military service. He highlights the complexities involved with education benefits and aims to provide peace of mind for students at Syracuse University.

“There are so many parts with education benefits depending on which program the student is using," says Capenos.

The Office of Veteran Success encourages military-connected students to seek guidance before making changes to their academic plans.
