Syracuse University has announced plans to develop a new full-service hotel on University Avenue as part of its housing strategy. This initiative comes after the conversion of the former Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel & Conference Center into Orange Hall, now accommodating approximately 400 students. The university recently acquired the Hotel Skyler Syracuse as well.
Brett Padgett, senior vice president and chief financial officer, stated, "Following the transformation of the former Sheraton Hotel, it was clear that there was still a significant need for additional hotel and event space in the area immediately adjacent to our campus." He added confidence in the new hotel's ability to serve both the campus community and enhance Syracuse University's role within the city and Onondaga County.
The planned hotel will feature around 200 rooms with a three-meal restaurant and event space. It is set to be located at University Avenue and Harrison Street, opposite the University Avenue Garage. Discussions are ongoing with prominent hotel brands to select one that aligns with campus needs. Additionally, collaboration with Onondaga County leadership aims to ensure alignment with future city and county requirements.
The focus will be on selecting a brand partner while progressing through design, development, and permitting stages. Subject to Board of Trustees approval, Syracuse University expects to open the new hotel by fall 2027.
