Chancellor Kent Syverud | Syracuse University
Chancellor Kent Syverud addressed the University Senate, providing updates on various university matters including athletics, benefits, and textbook affordability. In his speech, he acknowledged the efforts of Senators Tucker and Upton in highlighting the complexities and uncertainties surrounding college athletics. "There is a lot of change coming," Syverud noted, emphasizing ongoing shifts in media-driven consolidation and conference realignment.
Syverud highlighted two main changes: consolidation in college sports and increased costs for competing at high levels. He stressed that discussions on funding sources and expenditures need broader involvement beyond traditional decision-makers like athletic directors. "It has to be the faculty that are responsible for teaching and curriculum related to these students," he stated.
The Chancellor also expressed his intent to involve Syracuse University more actively in national discussions on these issues. He shared his views on topics such as collective bargaining and Title IX but recognized that these decisions require a broader consensus involving all stakeholders.
In other updates, Syverud mentioned the conclusion of open enrollment for benefits with WellNow now being in-network with Excellus. Ongoing negotiations with FamilyCare Medical Group and St. Joseph’s Health were also noted, with hopes for resolution by January 1st.
Regarding textbook affordability, management of the University Campus Store will transition to Barnes & Noble. A Textbook Affordability Working Group led by Associate Provost Julie Hasenwinkel and Senior Vice President John Papazoglou aims to address student concerns about high textbook costs. The group seeks early disclosure of textbook requirements by faculty to help students find affordable options.
Lastly, Syverud highlighted recent successes in football and basketball teams and announced the opening of Miron Victory Court as a new event space for various activities.
