Beginning this semester, Syracuse University students, faculty, and staff can request their legal gender designation be changed to "X" to identify as nonbinary, intersex, or gender non-conforming. This initiative aligns with state and federal guidelines. Additionally, starting this academic year, all members of the university community will have the option to identify their preferred gender designation. These changes aim to foster an inclusive environment for diverse identities within the campus.

Legal designation applies to government-issued documents such as personal identification and birth certificates, as well as official university documents like transcripts. In contrast, preferred gender designation is for individuals who indicate a preference without necessarily changing their legal designation.

Students interested in updating their legal gender designation can access the Change of Student Information form [PDF]. Faculty and staff can use the Employee Demographic Change form [PDF].
