The School of Architecture has selected Patrick J. Ahearn FAIA, an acclaimed classical architect and Syracuse University alumnus, to address graduates at the 2025 convocation ceremony. The event is scheduled for May 10, to be held at Hendricks Chapel.
Patrick Ahearn is not only a prominent figure in American architecture but also a committed member of the Syracuse University community. He serves on the School of Architecture Advisory Board, is a university trustee, and is part of the Syracuse University Boston Regional Council.
Ahearn is the founding principal of Patrick Ahearn Architect, a Boston-based firm emphasizing classic American architecture adapted to modern living. He has contributed to urban design and historic preservation throughout his career, with a focus on private residences that integrate seamlessly into their environments.
"Ahearn knew he wanted to be a designer from an early age," as his initial fascination with car design ignited his understanding of design principles. His background also includes contributions to prominent adaptive reuse projects, such as Boston's Faneuil Hall Marketplace.
Having established his firm in 1978, Ahearn dedicated himself to revitalizing numerous historic structures in Boston's Back Bay and transforming Edgartown Village on Martha’s Vineyard. His efforts extended to international locations, from Vancouver Island to Australia and Scotland.
Ahearn’s philosophy, known as “narrative-driven architecture,” emphasizes telling a story through each project, "demonstrating an unparalleled ability to combine the romance of traditional architecture with the ideals of modernism." His methodology remains committed to enhancing local communities and fostering public engagement in architectural spaces.
Recognized for his achievements, Ahearn is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. His work has appeared in publications such as Architectural Digest and The Wall Street Journal. A published author, his works include "Timeless" and "History Reinterpreted."
In addition to his architectural practice, Ahearn is a registered architect in 19 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and British Columbia, Canada. He is linked to several professional organizations and has contributed to academia by teaching at institutions such as Syracuse University and Harvard University.
The upcoming convocation will provide graduates an opportunity to hear from Ahearn, whose career epitomizes a blend of classic and contemporary design ethos.
