St. Joseph’s Health, in partnership with Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists (SOS), has introduced Mako SmartRobotics for knee and hip replacement surgeries. This technology enables surgeons to develop surgical plans tailored to each patient's anatomy, enhancing precision during procedures.
The system allows surgeons to prepare by reviewing a 3D model of the patient’s anatomy before surgery. Dr. David Quinzi of SOS highlighted that this approach could lead to more accurate reconstructions and less disruption of soft tissues, potentially improving outcomes.
Meredith Price, Senior Vice President of Acute Operations at St. Joseph’s Health, stated: “We are proud to collaborate with SOS to offer this highly advanced SmartRobotics technology in our area.” She emphasized that this development underscores their commitment to providing high-quality healthcare.
Mako Total Knee combines robotic technology with the Triathlon Total Knee System, aiming for increased precision in total knee replacements. For partial knee replacements, it targets only the damaged parts due to osteoarthritis while preserving healthy bone. Studies suggest robotic-assisted procedures improve implant positioning accuracy compared to manual methods.
Total hip replacements using Mako SmartRobotics cater to those with degenerative joint disease, allowing precise implant placement guided by the surgeon during surgery.
Dr. Quinzi clarified that "the surgery is performed by an orthopedic surgeon, who guides Mako’s robotic arm during the procedure," ensuring that the robot aids but does not replace human decision-making.
St. Joseph's Health continues its tradition of innovation since its founding as Syracuse's first public hospital in 1869. The organization is known for pioneering medical advancements and maintaining a strong focus on community health care excellence.
