Azar Abdulkadir, a U.S. Navy veteran and Syracuse University student, is dedicated to giving back to the Syracuse community that played a pivotal role in her early life. Originally from Nairobi, Kenya, Abdulkadir moved to the United States with her family at the age of 15. She recalls how the Northside Learning Center in Syracuse helped her adjust by providing support with homework and English language skills.
Abdulkadir's journey took a significant turn when she decided to join the U.S. Navy as a means to fund her education through the GI Bill. Her father was unexpectedly supportive of her decision to enlist. "When I started university, it was really hard because I couldn’t afford it," Abdulkadir explains. Her father's proactive involvement led her to meet with Navy recruiters and eventually enlist as a yeoman, serving on the USS Ronald Reagan in Japan.
After completing her military service, Abdulkadir chose Syracuse University for its strong support of veterans. "There are teams of people here dedicated to helping veterans," she says about the university’s resources aimed at easing veterans' transition into academic life.
Beyond academics, Abdulkadir is committed to contributing positively to the Northside Learning Center by teaching English and science. She emphasizes representation and influence: "I want to be a positive influence."
Reflecting on her military experience, Abdulkadir highlights work ethic over identity in fostering acceptance among peers: "They didn’t care that I was a woman... They just cared that I showed up." She credits her mother and Chief Williams for shaping her leadership style centered around guidance and mentorship.
Abdulkadir continues pursuing education while embodying values learned from both her military service and personal experiences.
