Last year, the Syracuse University Volunteer Organization (SUVO) collaborated with Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) to build 44 beds for local children. This year, under the leadership of SUVO President Claire Ceccoli, the initiative expanded significantly.

On February 21, over 200 members of the university community gathered at Skybarn on South Campus to construct 88 beds. Volunteers worked under the guidance of SHP volunteers, engaging in tasks such as sanding and assembling wood bed frames.

SUVO, supported by the Mary Ann Shaw Center for Public and Community Service, raised over $16,500 with seven campus student groups contributing. The Student Association’s “Spring Into Action Community Service Initiative” added another $5,500. Each bed costs $250 to produce.

Odette Sherk from the Franklin Supply Chain Club highlighted how the event provided practical experience relevant to their studies. "Participating in the bed build gave our student volunteers real life experience on an assembly line," she said.

SHP is a national nonprofit with a mission that no child should sleep on the floor. The Syracuse chapter delivers about 30 beds weekly and recently delivered its 6,000th bed. Dave Hoalcraft ’85, co-president of this chapter, emphasized community involvement: “This is what it’s all about … community.”

Ceccoli noted challenges in organizing the event but was encouraged by student support: “I’ve been so impressed by the way the students have stepped up.” Ryan Edwards and Dayton Kandrovy were among those who participated and expressed satisfaction with their contributions.

Ceccoli plans to continue working in nonprofit sectors after graduation: “My whole life, I’ve been searching for purpose-driven work.” She values her experiences at SUVO for providing leadership skills and opportunities to make a difference.
