The D’Aniello Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) at Syracuse University has secured a $3 million investment from Micron Technology. This funding will be used to establish a specialized Semiconductor Hub within the institute’s Onward to Opportunity (O2O) career training program. The initiative aims to connect transitioning service members, veterans, and their families with careers in the semiconductor industry.

This effort is aligned with the CHIPS and Science Act, reflecting a joint commitment by the D’Aniello Institute, Syracuse University, and Micron to create career opportunities for veterans and the military-connected community.

Micron plans to invest over $100 billion in New York state over 20 years to expand the semiconductor sector. This presents an opportunity to bridge veteran talent with industry needs. The Semiconductor Hub will provide participants with necessary skills, resources, and connections for success in semiconductor manufacturing and related fields.

“The D’Aniello Institute is proud to partner with Micron; the Semiconductor Hub is a testament to what’s possible when we align on a common goal,” said Ray Toenniessen, deputy executive director of the D’Aniello Institute. “Together, we’re not only addressing workforce needs but also empowering transitioning service members, veterans and their families to thrive in the private sector.”

Beyond technical training, this initiative addresses challenges faced by the military-connected community such as underemployment and limited access to quality education. Through partnerships, Micron and the D’Aniello Institute aim to create opportunities for veterans, women, and individuals from underserved communities.

For many of America’s 17 million veterans, transitioning from military to civilian life is critical. A recent RAND study notes that while significant federal funds are spent on transition programs focusing on education, veterans often require immediate skills-based training and employment opportunities. Although veteran unemployment rates have decreased recently, underemployment remains an issue.

This investment marks a milestone in supporting military families’ transitions post-service. By combining Micron’s technology leadership with IVMF's expertise in career training, this collaboration exemplifies how public-private partnerships can drive economic growth and effect meaningful change for service members.
