Hendricks Chapel is set to host the annual Pan Am Flight 103 memorial service on December 21 at 2:03 p.m. EST. The event will commence in the chapel’s Noble Room, followed by a procession to the Place of Remembrance.
The memorial service will pay tribute to the 270 individuals, including Syracuse University study abroad students, who lost their lives when Pan Am Flight 103 was destroyed by a terrorist bomb over Lockerbie, Scotland, on December 21, 1988. The service marks the anniversary of this tragic event, which occurred 36 years ago. Chaplains will lead prayers and offer reflections during the ceremony.
The event will also be available virtually for those unable to attend in person, with registration required to receive a YouTube link. Attendees have the opportunity to submit personal reflections and memories during registration, which may be included in the ceremony. Closed captioning will be provided for accessibility.
Additional accommodations can be requested by contacting Hendricks Chapel via email at chapelevents@syr.edu.
This service is organized in collaboration with several partners including the Remembrance and Lockerbie Scholars, Hendricks Chapel, and the Office of Alumni Engagement and Annual Giving.
On the same day, another memorial service is scheduled at the Pan Am 103 memorial cairn located at Arlington National Cemetery. This service is organized by the Victims of Pan Am Flight 103 families group.
