October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time when advocates, doctors, and community leaders emphasize the importance of awareness and education in combating breast cancer. The New York State Department of Health (DOH) reports that approximately 16,700 women are diagnosed with breast cancer annually in the state, resulting in about 2,500 deaths. Nationally, one in eight women will face a breast cancer diagnosis during their lifetime.

There is optimism within the medical community due to advancements in breast cancer research. The National Breast Cancer Foundation highlights that support efforts and early detection have significantly improved survival rates. When detected at its most localized stage, the "5-year relative survival rate" reaches 99%.

Regular screenings and check-ups play a crucial role in early detection. "The most important action you can take is to have regular breast cancer screenings, such as mammograms," states the department. "Finding cancer early is the key to survival." The DOH advises individuals over 40 to undergo screenings every other year, with heightened vigilance recommended for women over 50 and those with a family history.

To reduce breast cancer risk, the DOH suggests maintaining open communication with healthcare providers about personal concerns and family health history. Exercise, weight management, and avoiding unnecessary ionizing radiation exposure are also recommended preventive measures.

In Oswego County, residents benefit from services provided by Oswego County Opportunities’ Cancer Services Program Partnership. This program offers free screenings including mammograms and clinical exams. Interested individuals can contact 315-592-0830 for further information on services and eligibility.

Progress continues each year in breast cancer screening and treatment. As previously mentioned, early detection remains vital. During this Breast Cancer Awareness Month, there is hope to educate and empower individuals to make informed health decisions.
