Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh released a statement on August 19, 2024, addressing the passing of Ruth Colvin, founder of Literacy Volunteers of America.

"Ruth Colvin changed the way the world teaches literacy," Walsh stated. "She worked throughout her life to bring people together to reduce the devastating impact of not being able to read and improve people’s quality of life. The scope and scale of what she created from her eastside City of Syracuse home is immense. Syracuse and the rest of the world owe Ruth great honor and an immeasurable debt of gratitude."
