Syracuse NY Mayor's Office issued the following announcement on April 5.

Mayor Walsh sent a message to the City’s neighborhood and community organizations asking them to help spread the word across Syracuse: let’s show our appreciation to the essential workers serving us everyday during the COVID-19 pandemic. He asked residents to start the week of April 6 with recognition to our Sanitation workers. Please join us! Read the Mayor’s message below:

Dear Neighborhood and Community Partners,

Every hour of every day, dedicated public servants in education, health care, government and other fields are carrying out their duties in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. They are heroes who are saving lives; keeping us safe and healthy and helping our children continue to learn.

We want to recognize these heroes. I hope you will join me in offering special recognition, starting this week, to a group of our colleagues – our City Sanitation team. These dedicated employees have continued to pick up our trash and recycling everyday across our City. It is a difficult job under the best of circumstances. It’s even harder during COVID-19.

When your sanitation crews come by this week:

• Wait for them and #SayThankYou!

• Clap and wave from your front door, porch, and windows.

• Post a sign on your window!

• Post your moment on social and share it with the hashtag #SayThankYou.

I see this small but meaningful token of appreciation as the start of a community-wide effort to say thank you to all of the brave people helping us carry on our lives. If you have ideas you’d like to share, please email me at mayor@syrgov.net. Please share this message with your friends and members.

Help us spread the word about #SayThankYou for our Sanitation workers this week.

Let’s continue to take care of each other. Stay healthy and be safe.

And…thank you,

Mayor Ben Walsh
